The purpose of the National Educational Technology Plan is to provide a level of technoloogy skills to all students in the nation in order to improve learning. There are 5 goal areas for the plan:
Learning
Teaching
Assessment
Infrastructure
Productivity
In order for all students to learn, there must be common goals and objectives. Even though we teach in a different way, we must be working toward the same goals. This means no child will slip through the cracks along the way and miss an important skill.
Our teaching must be complete and absolute. We must not fail to teach our children to think and apply what they are learning. We must teach them to use technology and find the information they will need.
We must assess to make sure we have taught well and the children have learned the skills we want them to know.
We must have state of the art equipment and programs. Our children will need to be prepared for the workforce and they will need to have the highest level of skills for whatever they choose to do.
We must teach them to use their brain for productive tasks, not just games and videos. They must be willing to search and research for information. They must know how to apply the lessons they have learned in our classrooms.

Progress Report on Long-Range Plan For Technology
Every year, we are asked to survey our skills using the STaR Chart. This survey sends data to the state of Texas to document the development of our skills in the area of technology. We can view our levels while we are looking at the Long-Range Plan for Technology and see where we need to improve the instruction for the children.
The Long-Range Plan for Technology recommends implementation of technology guidelines for children in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade. It continually revises the standards to ensure that the lessons being taught are appropriate for the children so they are able to make adequate progress.
The TEKS have been revised by a committee with opportunities for feedback from the public. This is an ongoing process. It is the goal 0f this process that technology will be fully integrated in to public education so that children will use these tools in all subject areas, not just in the computer lab, or for games and videos.
Schools and teachers report their progress in meeting the requirements by completing the Texas STaR chart.
We are charged with helping children reach their goals. In order to do this, they will need to be able to understand and use various technological programs and products. The goal of the Long-Range plan is to make sure that all students in Texas are ready for this task. If they do not have access to technology at home, then we must make sure they have it at school. The goal of this plan is to make sure even the children who cannot afford the best have an equal opportunity to succeed.

Infrastructure For Technology
Technology is changing fast and it is difficult to keep up with the latest trends. Now IPads are all the rage. We are happy to have flat screen moniters on our computers. Laptops are getting smaller and smaller. Internet speed gets faster and faster.
We, as educators, are required by law to teach technology skills to our students. We are doing this, but our equipment is old by technology standards. As a local school district, we struggle to keep the equipment we have in working order, and to buy new tools as needed. We are required to teach our students how to gain use these tools to gain information and apply it to global issues. We follow state guidelines as to what our children should know, but more emphasis is being put on testing than on technology.
Federal guidelines require us to prepare students for the working environment they will see when they are finished with school. They need to have skill levels that can take them into the workforce. It is very difficult to do that when we are not able to expose them to the most inovative materials. We are preparing students for what lies ahead. Even in the most current budget crisis, we still need to update and upgrade the technology equipment we already have. This is the least we owe these children. They are depending on us.
